My Arts Practice
For as long as I can remember Art (writing, collaging, painting, singing, and movement) have helped give words, colours, something solid for my feelings to be externalized, expressed and processed through. Creating and witnessing art have helped me cope with trauma, nourished me & helped me survive some of the hardest times of my life. As a chronically ill, Brown, Queer, Femme I create art to share my stories with the world. I create visual art ( zines, painting, buttons, cards). I write and sing SongPoems. My story telling uses various arts mediums and I weave them in and out of one another.
Through my art, I aim to deconstruct, understand, and begin to heal from the effects of colonization that my ancestors and family have experienced. I also aim to examine, understand, and learn to how stand with folks whose land I am a settler on. My art centers around ancestors, matriarchs, stories of struggle, unlearning colonized ways of being, learning self-love, self soothing, unlearning shame and working towards healing trauma. All the forms of art I create help nourish my hurting parts. Writing and creating mixed media art is a way for me to uncover parts of myself, connect to others with similar struggles and to share my truths.
